• Jan 31, 2026 — Major revamp of all scripts and README ongoing. Midtraining stage removed. May be briefly messy.
• Jan 30, 2026 — GPT-2 grade LLM now trainable in ~$73. runs/speedrun.sh is the reference way to train and talk to your model.
• Jan 29, 2026 — New leaderboard record: 3.04 hours to GPT-2. See leaderboard.

The Oct 13 2025 original nanochat post introduced the project. The model and pipeline have improved significantly since. See guides for the original post link. Jan 7 miniseries v1 documented the first nanochat miniseries.
